The Most Expensive Mistake Business Podcasters Make in The First Minute | Newsletter #43

The Mic Drop Mastery Newsletter, Issue #43

Your Podcast Episodes Must Capture Attention

Never Violate Rule #1 of Podcasting

You’ve invited me onto your show as a guest and you ask the questions, “So, Jen. What do you do?”

How would this grab your audience’s attention?

“I am a podcast coaching strategist with years of experience helping heart-centered entrepreneurs scale their reach and unlock their potential.

Did your eyes just glaze over? Did you start to tune out? (Just like your audience would?)

This boring bio intro violates Rule #1 of Podcasting: Don’t Be Boring.

You and I have heard that exact boring intro hundreds of times from a multitude of entrepreneurs. And you and I cannot name a single one of them.

Now, if I said something like this instead:

“You know when it’s 11:33:34 PM on a late Sunday night, and you’re staring at an audio file, desperately editing out your own ‘umms’ while your family is asleep down the hall? You finally hit publish, go to bed high on cortisol and low on confidence only to wake up Tuesday morning to see exactly 14 downloads when you check your stats?

You sit there staring at the screen, a pit forming in your stomach, wondering if you’re literally just talking to an empty room and if it’s time to finally pull the plug on this podcasting gig.”

That intro creates instant connection.

You lean in.

You say the favorite words entrepreneurs long to hear: “Tell Me More!”

The first bore-you-to-tears intro will never capture attention.

The second, feel-it-in-the-pit-of-your-stomach intro is a literal show engager.

Say hello to the emotionally engaging, visceral power of a “You Know When” story. When you ditch dry, professional jargon and speak directly to your listener’s painful reality, you immediately garner attention.

Every good podcast starts with a very good hook.

Welcome to this week’s newsletter where we take action with the Mic Drop Mastery Method - my signature method for Studio Members inside the Substack Podcast Studio.

The best part about this Saturday newsletter - it helps you turn your podcast into profits, with speed. And, you don’t need to fret over those ummms at 11:33:34 pm at night.

Each week, you get to choose from three options to become memorable, referable, and profitable with your podcast.

Let’s jump right in.

xoxo

Become Memorable

Sticky Soundbites

Your Work Impacts Generations

Read this definition of podcast impact: “Podcasting helps your listeners solve problems so they can reach their goals.”

B.

O.

R.

I.

N.

G.

Let’s try that again using a visceral hook.

You know when your ideal client is sitting at her kitchen table at 6:31 AM, staring blindly into a cold cup of coffee, snapping at her spouse because the weight of making decisions alone, second-guessing every move, and feeling like she’s one more setback away from giving up?

It’s completely consuming her.

Then, she plugs in her AirPods, goes for a walk, and hits play on your latest episode. Twenty minutes later, she walks back through the front door, opens her notebook, circles the one priority that matters this quarter, and confidently tells her team what they’re focusing on next.”

You didn’t just solve a business problem for one single listener. You changed the temperature of her entire home. You changed how she showed up for her spouse and her kids that day - and her team.

Know this: You aren’t just recording audio into a microphone to fill your consistency commitment on your podcast feed.

The work you do transforms lives. And not just the lives of your one client. The lives your client touches, influences, parents, loves.

You shape convictions, alter trajectories, and leave a mark that far outlasts the algorithm.

But to get them there, you have to hook your audience first by intimately understanding and then naming the vivid, invisible struggles they are currently navigating.

When people know exactly what you stand for and who you help, then hire you, and then experience real transformation, you’re taking part in creating generational memorability, influence, and impact

🎬 Your Memorable Action Step

Write down the specific, tangible change your clients experience and the ripple effect it has on the people around them. Write it down, internalize it, and then incorporate those visceral wins into your future episodes, Substack Notes, and articles.

The 🎤︎︎ Substack Podcast Studio never violates Rule #1 of Podcasting (Don’t Be Boring). We capture the attention of our ideal clients. Come inside and I’ll share more to help you become memorable, referable, and profitable!

Become Referable

Buzz Builder

Imagine with me

Imagine someone has been following you on Substack for a few months.

They’ve read your Notes. They never miss your podcast. They’ve joined a couple of Lives, but they’ve never hired you.

One afternoon, they’re having coffee with a friend.

The friend sighs and says, “I know I should be getting more from my podcast, but I have no idea what’s missing.”

Your subscriber immediately says,

“I’ve been following this woman named Jen on Substack. She keeps talking about Podcast TLC. It’s all about using your podcast to build trust, leverage your content, and naturally convert listeners into clients. You should check her out.”

Now compare that to this:

“Oh, I know someone who’s really good at podcasts.”

Both are compliments.

Only one creates curiosity.

Only one is memorable.

Only one is truly referable.

That is the power of a Signature System. Your named process gives people something specific to remember, repeat, and recommend.

Podcasting is one of your greatest assets for building this kind of authority. Every episode is another opportunity to reinforce the beliefs and convictions you stand for and the process that makes your approach stand out. That’s exactly what Podcast TLC was designed to do.

(If you want to see this in action, listen to Podcasting Is Your Secret Weapon.)

Your Podcast Secret Weapon

If you don’t have a name for your process, you’re asking people to remember a collection of ideas instead of a recognizable methodology.

A Signature System gives your audience a shortcut.

It gives them the words to say over coffee, on a Zoom call, in a text message, or inside a networking conversation when someone needs exactly what you do.

Think Podcast TLC.

Let me share one more example. I’ve worked with my client Bill Henessy and his podcast, Ignite Retirement. One of his signature systems? The PURPOSE Method. Bill’s got a cool graphic, too. Check it out below:

Listen, whether we’re talking about Podcasting TLC for Trust, Leverage, and Conversion, or Bill’s Purpose Method, the name doesn’t change your process.

Your Signature System Name reveals it and gives your audience a reference point they can repeat.

The strongest Signature Systems aren’t clever. They’re rooted in the core conviction you teach over and over again until your audience starts repeating it without you in the room.

🎬 Your Referable Action Step

Your podcast should make you memorable before someone ever needs your offer. Your signature system is the bridge.

Take a look at the process you use to help clients get results. What do you help them believe, do, or achieve again and again?

Give that process a name your clients can remember, repeat, and refer.

» Then send me a DM and tell me what you created. I want to hear it! And…what you have may be just what someone else in the Studio needs.

Cha-Ching Content

Your listener is driving in rush hour traffic, gripping the steering wheel, half-listening while their kids argue in the backseat.

If you whisper a subtle hint about your offer at minute 22, they will miss it.

Masterful podcasters don’t rely on hints.

They rely on the oldest rule in speaking: Tell ‘em what you’re gonna tell ‘em, tell ‘em, and then tell ‘em what you told ‘em.

Masterful podcasters consistently repeat their core message - even if they are sick and tired of hearing themselves say it - because they understand the sheer volume of distraction they must break through.

When you confidently tell your audience what you promised and then fully deliver on it, you build trust. That trust leads directly to conversions, but only when your Calls to Action are seamlessly aligned with your message and highlight your signature systems.

Know Exactly What to Say Next: How to create content that meets your buyer where they are

Bonus JULY Session

Join The Studio before July 31 for access to the paid subscriber bonus session.

If you’ve ever stared at your content ideas and wondered:

“Is this too basic?”

“Is my audience ready for this?”

“Why does this episode get attention but not inquiries?”

“How do I create content that moves people toward working with me?”

This session is for you.

You’ll learn how to use the five stages of buyer awareness to decide:

  • What your audience needs to hear first.

  • What content builds trust before the sale.

  • What topics create curiosity and conversation.

  • What episodes naturally support your offers.

  • How to create content that meets people where they are and helps them take the next step.

Know this! Profitable podcasts are not built by publishing more content.

They are built by publishing the right content for the right person at the right time.

The paid tier is currently $147.

This session alone is valued at $497 because understanding buyer awareness changes the way you approach every episode, email, post, and offer.

I’ll eventually sell this session as a standalone workshop.

Right now, the only way into the room is through The Studio.
