Why fake scarcity is out, and what 25 paid subscribers taught me about capacity and clarity.
How many times have you gotten that email?
You know the one.
“Oops, we goofed!”
No, you didn’t.
The goof was planned.
The “we’ve been getting so many questions” email was planned.
The 48-hour cart extension was planned.
The aggressive red countdown timer was planned.
At this point, some launches have more costume changes than a middle school musical.
And we are tired.
Tired of being stuffed into a group program where your biggest breakthrough is figuring out where the replay lives.
Tired of fake urgency.
Tired of being coached to manufacture urgency instead of creating value.
That is one of the reasons Substack has felt so ding-dang refreshing!
On Substack, we build through connection.
We write like humans.
Speak like humans.
Sell like humans.
👋Hello human!!! Lovely to be here with you!
23 days ago I opened the paid tiers inside the Substack Podcast Studio, a little over 90 days after moving onto the platform, and the biggest thing I can tell you is this:
Opening paid tiers is not just a tech decision.
It is a business model decision.
A capacity decision.
A courage decision.
And if you get it wrong, you will feel it in your calendar, your energy, and your resentment level by about Tuesday.
So if you’ve been wondering whether paid tiers belong in your podcast growth strategy, here are three lessons worth borrowing before you open (or revise) your tiers.
Lesson 1: Build on Real Capacity Instead of Fake Scarcity
At the time of this recording, there are 25 paid subscribers inside the Studio.
Eight of them are Founders.
Eight.
That means eight people looked at the premium tier, saw the bonus one-to-ones, and said, “Yes, I would like that, thank you very much.”
Now on one hand, delightful.
On the other hand, that made me sit up straighter in my chair and do the math.
Founder access comes with two bonus one-to-one opportunities with me:
a private 45-minute working session
and a featured guesting session on the Substack Podcast Studio where I coach founding subscribers how to talk about what they do in a way that makes them unforgettable
That is not pretend support.
That is real access.
Real time.
Real energy.
Real calendar space.
And I do not sell pretend access.
That is the lesson.
When the room grows, your stewardship grows with it.
Fake scarcity says, “Only three spots left,” while 300 people are still lined up behind the curtain.
Real capacity says, “This is the number of people I can serve well at this level before something needs to change.”
That is why once the Studio hits 10 Founders, the price goes up.
Listen, I’m not being overly dramatic here. I’m assessing my capacity to serve with excellence.
If you open paid tiers without understanding your own bandwidth, you can very easily build yourself a cute little cage and call it recurring revenue.
No thank you.
Build the room you can steward.
Not just the room you can sell.
Lesson 2: Unclear Offer Names Make You Work Harder
My husband and I recently celebrated crossing 4,000 podcast downloads with a bottle of Silver Oak 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon and my favorite meal: sushi.
Now let’s pause right there.
Silver Oak.
That name does something.
It sounds rooted.
Rich.
Strong.
Like it belongs in a wine cellar with dramatic lighting and someone describing “notes of blackberry” without cracking up.
Silver Oak does not sound like Boone’s Farm.
You do not pour Silver Oak into red Solo cups in the backwoods and hope nobody’s mama finds out.
Boone’s Farm knew exactly what it was.
The name matched the experience.
Our names must do the same thing.
Names either pull people in or make them work too hard.
And if they have to work too hard, they keep scrolling.
I got reminded of that all over again with one of my own offers:
Now let me be clear. The tool itself is strong. It’s a powerful self-diagnostic for your podcast.
But the name?
The name is making people squint.
And when people squint, I have to explain.
And when I have to explain, I have to work harder.
I spent nearly 40 hours* building the Podcast Health Checkup, and I ended up having more one-to-one conversations selling that $47 offer than I’ve had selling a $2,000 consulting package.
That is absurd.
Also informative.
The problem is not the value. The problem is on me. The name isn’t converting.
This is a lesson I apparently get sent back to the classroom for again and again:
Clever is fun. Clear gets purchased.
So if your publication name, your paid tier name, or your bonus offer sounds like something your audience has to tilt their head at like a confused golden retriever, fix it.
You are not writing a riddle.
You are inviting a decision.

Lesson 3: Know if You Are Fighting Confusion or Resistance
Confusion sounds like this:
I don’t know who this tier is for
I don’t know what people get
I’m not sure what problem this solves
I don’t know why someone would pay for this
That is not a sign to “just be brave.”
That is a sign to get clearer.
But resistance sounds different.
Resistance sounds like:
I know what this is
I know who it helps
I know it fits my business model
But…
Identifying the price while giving massive value…well that was a wrestling match with myself.
I was not confused about the Studio.
I knew Christian business owners needed a place to build voice-first authority without getting dragged into social media foolishness.
I knew podcasters needed help turning their shows into business assets instead of weekly content chores that glare at them from their to-do list.
I knew all of that.
And still, resistance showed up.
Because resistance loves to whisper dumb little things like:
What if nobody joins?
What if they do join?
What if I price it wrong?
What if I look foolish?
What if this works - can I steward it?
If your paid tier fits your business plan, and you have a clear way to help people create something useful in less time, resistance is not always a stop sign.
Sometimes it is just the sound your nervous system wigging out thanks to our powerful, protecting reptilian brain.
If you are trying to decide whether paid tiers belong in your Substack strategy, start there:
Not “Can I open them?”
But “Can I steward them?”
